Dear Alice,

I know this sounds gross, but sometimes when I get turned on, I like to rub my "vaginal area" on a stuffed dog. After it, I feel good, but a few minutes later, some discharge comes out on my underwear. What's going on, and is this safe?

Dear Reader,

It’s normal to have questions like this, and it’s not gross at all! What you’re describing seems like vaginal wetness, the body’s response to arousal or orgasm. Using a stuffed animal for masturbation isn’t inherently unsafe. However, it’s worth paying attention to hygiene and how your body reacts afterward. Read on to learn more about masturbation with stuffed animals, the types of discharge, and safer sex practices when masturbating.

Is masturbating with a stuffed animal common?

While there aren’t any solid statistics on masturbating with a stuffed animal, masturbating with everyday objects is pretty common. Many people experiment with different forms of stimulation as they learn what feels good to them. This often includes objects such as a pillow, a shower head, or the handle of a hairbrush. This kind of experimentation is a normal part of understanding your body and preferences.

That said, masturbating with a stuffed animal isn’t abnormal. For many people, stuffed animals are comfort objects, which can play a big role in pleasure. What matters most is that the activity is safe and doesn’t cause any type of harm.

What are some safer practices you can do when masturbating with stuffed animals?

When masturbating with stuffed animals, it’s important to think about hygiene and safety. Stuffed animals can collect dust, bacteria, and other germs. Cleaning stuffed animals before and after masturbation can help lower any health risks, such as irritation or infections. Additionally, putting a condom over the stuffed animal can add an extra layer of protection. This can help keep the stuffed animal cleaner, reduce direct contact with bacteria, and prevent loose pieces from breaking off and entering the body.

Why is there discharge during masturbation?

When you're sexually aroused, it’s normal for your vagina to become wet. This moisture helps with lubrication and is produced by glands located near the vaginal opening. Around the time of orgasm, when you feel the most pleasure, there might be a clear or whitish fluid coming from the vagina. This fluid is not urine, which comes from the urethra. Instead, this fluid comes from a separate set of glands located near the urethra.

It’s also possible for fluid to be released through the urethra during orgasm. This experience is sometimes referred to as “squirting.” More research needs to be done on what exactly this fluid is. Evidence suggests it’s a mix of diluted urine and fluids coming from the glands near the urethra.

What is considered normal discharge?

Everyone has their own type of discharge that is normal for their body. The amount, color, and odor can vary from person to person and can also change throughout the menstrual cycle.

If you notice discharge that feels different than usual or notice vaginal itching, burning, or irritation, it might point to an allergic reaction or infection. These health conditions are often caused by sensitivity to products like scented soaps, detergents, or hygiene products.

Certain changes in discharge can indicate an underlying health condition. Examples include:

  • A frothy yellow or green discharge with a strong smell can be a sign of trichomoniasis.
  • Thick, white discharge that seems like cottage cheese might indicate a yeast infection.
  • Yellow, white, or gray discharge with a fishy smell might be related to bacterial vaginosis.

If something seems off compared to what’s normal for you, you might consider reaching out to a health care provider. They can help you figure out the cause and a plan on what to do next.

Overall, exploring what feels good is a normal part of sexuality. When you feel pleasure when masturbating, vaginal wetness is normal. Being aware of what’s typical for your body can help you recognize when something feels off and when it might be a good idea to check in with a health care provider.

Stay plush,
