Alice,

Why do I feel like I have to go to the bathroom when I have sex?

Dear Reader,

For some women, if a penis, fingers, or an object puts pressure on their bladder during sex, they may experience the sensation of wanting to pee, even if they don't actually need to urinate. Some men also experience this feeling when similar sources apply pressure to the prostate (just inside the rectum). For both guys and gals, full bladders and bowels prior to play time can intensify the urge to go during sex. So, urinating or excreting before engaging your sex tools can help reduce the sensation, or the actual need, to use the bathroom. Changing your sexual positions in order to find one where there is less pressure against your bladder, rectum, or prostate may also make a difference. By the way, peeing and pooping after sex can help prevent some bladder and sexually transmitted infections (STIs).

A visit to a health care provider may be in order if you have any of the following:

  • the sensation to urinate or to have a bowel movement does not go away despite using the bathroom or a change in sexual positions
  • feeling the need to pee is persistent (not just during sex)

If the second situation applies to you, you may have a bladder or other infection, which would require immediate medical attention. Some signs of a bladder infection are:

  • Pain or burning when urinating
  • Feeling like you need to pee often (and especially if nothing comes out)
  • Unpleasant urine smell
  • Blood in urine

If what you're experiencing cannot be explained by the above, then make an appointment with your health care provider for a check-up.

Alice, I just read your answer to, Why do I feel like I have to go to the bathroom when I have sex?, and noticed that you did not mention female ejaculation. The sensation building up to ejaculating, for women, can feel like the need to pee, but it is quite different. Many women and their partners may even think that the ejaculation is urine — since many people do not know that female ejaculation is possible — but it does not smell like urine and is not urine. Please research this phenomenon and tell us more about it. It needs to be better understood. Thanks. Alice
